3DTV NoE leads the world in compression for 3D

ISO MPEG started work on two 3D video related standards at the meeting in January 2006 in Bangkok. The first will be a format developed in the ATTEST project based on a video+depth representation. This standard will be available in January 2007. The second will be a more general format for Multiview Video Coding (MVC). It is expected that the MVC standard as an extension of H.264/AVC will be available in January 2008.

Researchers from the NoE play leading roles in MPEG standardization for 3D video, both on technical as well as on management level.

On the technical side the proposal submitted by Fraunhofer HHI and developed within the NoE won the MPEG Call for Proposals on MVC out of 8 competing proposals from Asia, the USA and Europe. It was selected by MPEG as basis for further development of the standard.

The specification for the video+depth format was developed by Fraunhofer HHI together with Philips and other international partners.

On the management side researchers from Franhofer HHI chair both related subgroups in MPEG that carry out the work.
